Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Sioux. Etymons: French Issati, Sioux Isáŋyathi.
Etymology: < (i) French †Issati (1678 as Izaty; now Santee, after English), and its etymon (ii) Sioux (Santee and Teton) Isáŋyathi, Isáŋʔathi, lit. ‘camp at the knife (quarry)’ < isáŋ knife + -athi to camp at, apparently so called with reference to a former settlement, perhaps either at Pipestone Monument, Minnesota, or at Knife Lake, Minnesota (Sioux (Santee) Isáŋtamde), itself apparently so called on account of the deposits in the region of flint, a material historically used for making blades.Forms with -an- in the second syllable reflect the nasalized vowel of Sioux isáŋ knife.
