Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps the reflex either of an unattested Old English Class I weak verb *ryngan or of an equivalent verb in early Scandinavian formed on the zero-grade of the Germanic base of rank adj. and rink n.1; see further E. J. Dobson Origins Ancrene Wisse (1976) 105 note 2.
