Etymology: < scientific Latin Ruminantia, group name ( G. A. Scopoli Introductio ad historiam naturalem sistens genera lapidum, plantarum, et animalium (1777) 493), specific use of classical Latin rūminantia, neuter plural of the present participle of rūminārī or rūmināre ruminate v. Compare earlier ruminant n. and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.Compare the following earlier occurrence of post-classical Latin ruminantia (plural noun) in an English context, alongside other Latin nouns:1693 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 17 931 Secondly, Bisulca, which are either Ruminantia, as the Bovinum genus, Ovis, and the Caprinum and Cervinum genera: Or Non Ruminantia, as the Porcus and Aper.
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A division of hoofed mammals that comprises the ruminants, now regarded as a suborder of Artiodactyla that excludes the camel family (cf. tylopod adj. and n. at tylo- comb. form ). Also: mammals of this division (collectively or individually).
