Etymology: < Rosinante, Rozinante (Spanish Rocinante ), the name of the horse ridden by Don Quixote in the satirical romance of that name by Miguel de Cervantes (see Quixote n.).Don Quixote gives this name to the horse on deciding to use him as his steed. It is formed as a deliberately noble-sounding name, punningly < Spanish rocín horse, hack (see rouncy n.1) + ante before (see ante adv.), with allusion to the animal's former status as a workhorse or nag. Compare:1612 T. Shelton tr. M. de Cervantes Don-Quixote: Pt. 1 i. 6 He finally concluded to name him Rozinante, a name in his opinion, lofty, ful, and significative of what he had beene when he was a simple horse, before he was exalted to his new dignity.
