Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew rō'š haššānāh.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew rō'š haššānāh first day of the Jewish year < biblical Hebrew rō'š beginning, transferred use of rō'š head (cognate with the Semitic nouns cited at ras n.1) + ha- the + šānāh year.The β. forms with -o- in the second or third syllable of the second element reflect the Ashkenazic Hebrew pronunciation. In the form Rosh Haushaunau in quot. 1753, -au- represents /ɔː/.
Judaism.
The Jewish New Year, celebrated on the first (and in the diaspora also the second) day of the month Tishri (Tishri n.), the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. Cf. feast of trumpets at trumpet n. 1c.The festival usually falls in September and October in the Gregorian calendar.
