单词 ropery
释义

roperyn.

Brit. /ˈrəʊp(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈroʊp(ə)ri/
Forms: Middle English–1600s roperie, 1500s reparie (probably transmission error), 1500s roppery, 1600s roparie, 1600s roperye, 1700s– ropery; also Scottish 1800s raperie, 1800s roperie, 1800s– raperee, 1900s– roperee.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rope n.1, -ery suffix.
Etymology: < rope n.1 + -ery suffix. Compare post-classical Latin roperia (from c1320 in British sources). In quot. 1599 at sense 2 apparently originally an alteration of or a typographical error for rope-ripe n. 2 (compare the reading in the earlier Quarto as seen in quot. 1597 at rope-ripe n. 2), perhaps influenced by roguery n. (which was often substituted for it in later editions). Fletcher's character speaking in quot. a1625 at sense 2 shows influence from the Nurse in Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet; compare the discussions of the word noted at rope-ripe adj.
1. A place (formerly long stretch of ground) where ropes are made, a ropewalk. In early quots. as the name of a locality in London; in quot. 1744 referring to a locality in Newcastle upon Tyne.
