Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi rohū.

Etymology: < Hindi rohū, denoting this fish, literally ‘red one’, ultimately < the base of Sanskrit rohita red (as a colour of animals), as noun denoting various animals, including the rohu (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as red adj.) + -ū, suffix chiefly forming agent nouns in colloquial constructions (with the sense of ‘someone who’), also used to form (chiefly hypocoristic) shortened forms of longer, e.g. compound, names ( < Sanskrit -ūka).Compare also Hindi rohit ( > scientific Latin rohita, the specific name of this fish), Bengali rui, both denoting the same fish < Sanskrit rohita.

A large, edible freshwater fish, Labeo rohita (family Cyprinidae), native to South Asia and introduced elsewhere.
