Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: phen- comb. form, anilide n., -yl suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < fen- (representing phen- comb. form) + -t- (perhaps an arbitrary element) + an- (in anilide n.) + -yl suffix, representing the names of components of the molecular structure.
Pharmacology.
A synthetic opiate which is a powerful analgesic, used particularly in anaesthesia.Chemical name: N-(1-phenethyl-4-piperidyl)propionanilide, C22H28N2O.
