单词 rokelay
释义

rokelayn.

Brit. /ˈrəʊkli/, U.S. /ˈroʊkli/, Scottish English /ˈroklɪ/
Forms: 1700s (North American) rockolet, 1800s (English regional (northern)) 1900s– (rare, archaic) rokelay; Scottish 1700s rockla, 1700s roculla, 1700s roklie, 1700s rookly, 1700s–1800s rocklay, 1700s–1800s rokely, 1700s– rokelay, 1800s rockley, 1800s rokeley, 1900s rogullay (irregular), 1900s rogully (irregular).
Origin: Perhaps from a proper name. Etymons: proper name Roquelaure, Roquelaire.
Etymology: Perhaps < the name of Antoine-Gaston, Duc deRoquelaure (also in English linguistic contexts in the 18th cent. as de Roquelaire: see roquelaure n.), although the use of the word so early in the Duke's lifetime may be problematic, the vowel quantity of the early examples is unclear, and the ending differs significantly from that of the surname. Compare French roquelaure roquelaure n., although this is first recorded later and apparently only as the name of a man's garment. Compare later roquelaure n. and discussion at that entry.Compare the following apparently isolated example of rokelay to denote a man's cloak, apparently arising by confusion of the present word and roquelaure n.:1892 J. G. Austin David Alden's Daughter 1 (title) Major Bradford's Red Rokelay.
Chiefly Scottish. Now historical.
A short cloak worn by women esp. during the 18th cent.
