Any of numerous shrubs and small trees constituting the genus Rhododendron (family Ericaceae), which have leathery leaves and showy campanulate or funnel-shaped flowers of various colours, are native to Eurasia (esp. eastern and south-eastern Asia) and North America, and include many kinds grown for ornament. Also in restricted use, esp. in Horticulture: any of the evergreen plants of this genus (contrasted with azalea); esp. Rhododendron ponticum, a large purple-flowered bush, which is widely cultivated, and naturalized (cf. ponticum n.). Also (in form Rhododendron): the genus itself. The evergreen species mostly have campanulate flowers. The deciduous species mostly have funnel-shaped flowers, and were formerly placed in a distinct genus, Azalea; they are often still called azaleas by gardeners. There is some uncertainty as to the identity of the plant referred to in the first quotation.
