Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Urdu ʿambārī; Persian ʿamārī; French embary.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu ʿambārī, and its etymon (ii) Persian ʿamārī (11th cent. or earlier; apparently < Arabic ʿammāriyya , in the same sense, apparently < an element of uncertain origin + -iyya , feminine form corresponding to -i suffix2); originally (in form embary) via French embary (1671 or earlier).

Etymology: < Hindi ambāṛī, of unknown origin.Hindi ambāṛā (also sometimes ambāṛī) hog plum ( < Sanskrit āmrātaka, in the same sense) is probably unrelated.
More fully ambari hemp. The fibre from the stem of a plant, Hibiscus cannabinus (family Malvaceae), used for making rope, canvas, and paper. Also: the plant itself, a tall annual herb with pale yellow or red flowers, native to East Africa and widely cultivated in southern and eastern Asia. Also called kenaf.
