Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil ampalam.
Etymology: < Tamil ampalam public building, temple. In the γ. forms probably influenced by Sinhala ambalama (plural ambalam; < Tamil).The β. forms perhaps reflect the pronunciation of a combining form in Tamil. Compare the following isolated early example of the Tamil word (or perhaps the Sinhala plural form) in an English context:1681 R. Knox Hist. Relation Ceylon 99 They commonly meet at places built for strangers and way-faring men to lodge in, in their Language called Amblomb.
In Sri Lanka: a simple building, typically pillared and mostly open-sided, used as a rest house or shelter for travellers, or (formerly) as a village meeting place.
