Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, victual v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + victual v. (compare forms at that entry, and see discussion at victual n.), originally after Middle French ravitailler (1427; French ravitailler ; < re- re- prefix + avitailler to provide with victuals: see avitaile n.). Compare Middle French, French revictailler, French †revitailler (1596).The form revittle is archaic and regional (chiefly U.S.) in later use, but (as with victual n.) the usual pronunciation corresponds to this older spelling.
1. transitive. To supply (a place, fleet, etc.) with a fresh stock of provisions. Also reflexive. Now chiefly historical.
