Etymology: < French retroussage (1866 in this sense; 1845 in sense ‘act of ploughing a vineyard for the fourth time’) < retrousser to wipe (an etching plate) more or less clean after having inked it in such a way as to produce greater relief in certain parts of it, or to produce a smudged effect (1866; specific use of retrousser to turn up, to hitch up: see retroussé adj.) + -age -age suffix.Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (rətrusāʒ) /rətrusaʒ/.
