Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: restore v.1, -ess suffix1.
Etymology: < restore v.1 + -ess suffix1, after restorer n.In quot. 1857 translating Middle French restitueresse (1568 in an apparently isolated attestation in a letter from Mary, Queen of Scots to Elizabeth I, the source translated in the quot.; < restitueur restitutor n. + -esse -ess suffix1). In quot. 1996, and probably also in quot. 1865, after post-classical Latin reparatrix (see reparatrice n.), applied to the Virgin Mary.
