Etymology: < French autosite ( I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire Hist. générale et particulière des anomalies de l'organisation chez l'homme et les animaux (1836) III. 186) < ancient Greek αὐτόσιτος bringing one's own provisions < αὐτο- auto- comb. form¹ + σῖτος food (see sito- comb. form).
