Etymology: < German Minnesinger (Middle High German minnesinger < minne love (see mean v.1) + -singer singer n.1; compare Meistersinger n. and note at that entry). Compare French minnesinger (1766). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mi·nĭsiŋəɹ) /ˈmɪnəsɪŋə(r)/.

Any of the German lyrical poets and singers of the 12th to 14th centuries, whose songs were chiefly concerned with courtly love. Also in extended use.
