Origin: Of uncertain origin; probably a borrowing from an Australian Aboriginal language.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < an Australian Aboriginal language of arid inland Australia, where the plant grows.Perhaps < Pirriya (an extinct language of western Queensland) minarityi or < a dialect of the Western Desert language, e.g. Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara (far north-western and far north-central South Australia) minyuṟa desert mulga + tji- (in tjitin-tjitin (or more usually tjintiri-tjintiri) reddish), Pintupi and Luritja (west of Alice Springs and parts of far northern South Australia) minyarra bark + tji- (in tjiṯintjiṯinpa red).

A shrub or small tree, Acacia cyperophylla (family Mimosaceae ( Leguminosae)), of arid inland Australia, having reddish bark which peels off in thin curls (more fully minnerichi tree). Also: the wood of this tree. Also called red mulga.
