Etymology: < classical Latin resolvent-, resolvēns, present participle of resolvere resolve v.Compare French résolvant (adjective) causing or promoting resolution of tumours (1314 in Old French as resolvant , subsequently from 1771), designating a derived equation or function which is introduced in order to aid the solution of some given equation (1800 or earlier), (masculine noun) resolvent medicine or treatment (1549 in Middle French as resolvant ; rare before the second half of the 18th cent.), and also résolvante (feminine noun) resolvent equation or function (1776 or earlier). With the β. forms compare -ant suffix1.
