Etymology: < Persian rang colour, hue, paint, dye, indigo (Middle Persian rang ) < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit raj- to become coloured (see raga n.).The origin of the vowel in English is uncertain; it may show influence from Turkish reng-, renk ( < Persian rang ) or it may be a development within English. With henna reng compare Persian rang-o hana reng and henna purchased together for mixing.

A blue–black dye made from the powdered leaves of the indigo plant and used to colour the hair, typically in combination with henna. Frequently in henna reng.
