Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French repoussé, repousser.
Etymology: < French repoussé, past participle of repousser (in metalwork) to create repoussé work (attested only from 1875 in dictionaries of French (implied 1870 by the noun, repoussé , denoting a piece of repoussé work), but compare quot. 18511 at sense B.; earlier (1840) in different spec. use in metalwork), specific sense of repousser to push back (16th cent. in Middle French; 14th cent. in sense ‘to repulse, force back’) < re- re- prefix + pousser push v.

Of metalwork: done or produced by hammering the reverse side in order to create an ornamental relief; (of a metal sheet or object) ornamented with such a relief. Cf. chased adj.2
