Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French regenerer (French régénérer ) to cause to be spiritually reborn through baptism (c1050 in Old French), to create again, to regenerate, to cause (part of the body, tissue, etc.) to form again after loss or injury (all second half of the 14th cent.), to renew, purify (late 14th cent.), to perpetuate (a line, a race, etc.) (a1400) and its etymon classical Latin regenerāre (see regenerate v.). Compare regender v.1 Compare also later regenerate v.
