Etymology: < classical Latin reliquātiōn-, reliquātiō balance of a debt (2nd or 3rd cent. a.d.) < reliquāt- , past participial stem of reliquārī to be in arrears ( < reliquum remainder, residue, use as noun of neuter of reliquus : see reliquiae n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French reliqua (14th cent.), Middle French relicat, Middle French, French reliquat (1409).
