Etymology: < re- prefix + flame v. In quot. 1481 at sense 1 after Anglo-Norman and Middle French reflamboier to shine brightly (c1100 in Old French). Compare also Middle French reflammer to rekindle (c1398), post-classical Latin reflammare to rekindle (4th cent.), reflammescere to flame up again (late 12th cent. in a British source).
