Television and Cinematography.
A technique or process for selectively combining two different images to form a composite scene by filming in front of a coloured screen or background, used esp. for depicting live action in drawn, modelled, or computer-generated settings. Also: a facility for doing this. Frequently attributive.The process is implemented by replacing all the areas of a particular colour in the background image with corresponding parts of the other (e.g. an actor's) image. The background colour is usually blue or green, as these are considered to be the least like skin tones: cf. blue screen n. 1, green screen n. at green adj. and n.1 Compounds 1d(a).

1958 R. C. Kennedy & F. J. Gaskins in Proc. IRE 46 1798/1 A new process called ‘Chroma-Key’ is described. ‘Chroma-Key’ is an insetting or matting technique intended for color television which utilizes a highly saturated color background for the inset subject.
1972 Film Q. Spring 54/1 An elaborate television special-effects board used to inject one image into another by keying (‘Chromakey’ in color TV parlance) and wiping.
1987 S. Brand Media Lab ii. xi. 222 The local weatherperson..is gesturing at a blank wall. The image is inserted by a technique called Chromakey.
