English regional (East Anglian). Now historical and rare.
Either of two Eurasian warblers having a song that is a high-pitched, mechanical-sounding trill, Savi's warbler, Locustella luscinioides, and the grasshopper warbler, L. naevia. Cf. reeler n.1 3, reeling n.2 2.

1856 J. Brown in H. Stevenson Birds Norfolk I. (1866) 111 We called it [sc. Savi's warbler] the reel bird, on account of the resemblance of its monotonous note to the continuous whirr of the reel, at that time used by the hand-spinners of wool.
