1924 Sci. Monthly Sept. 294 The enclosed arc, giving long burning hours and thus reducing the cost of re-carboning, was introduced in 1893.
2005 V. Smil Creating Twentieth Cent. ii. 38 They [sc. glass-encloded arcs] did not lower the cost of recarboning enough to make arcs a better choice than advanced gas lighting.
