Etymology: < French récipiangle (1622 or earlier), apparently < recipi- (in classical Latin recipient- , recipiēns , present participle of recipere receive v.; compare recipient n.) + French angle angle n.2 Compare post-classical Latin recipiangulum (1721 or earlier).Compare earlier recipient-angle (compare also quots. 1755 and 1973; < recipient n. + angle n.2, after French récipiangle):1723 E. Stone tr. N. Bion Constr. & Principal Uses Math. Instruments iii. 105 There are several Sorts of Recipient-Angles [Fr. History of Science.
An instrument for measuring or marking off angles consisting of two arms pivoted about a common centre, each with sights, and a protractor or graduated arc against which the arms can be moved.
