Etymology: < the name of Wilhelm Berkefeld (1836–97), German engineer, who developed a water filter using diatomaceous earth in 1891.In the form Berkefield with remodelling within English after surnames in -field (see field n.1).
attributive. Designating a type of filter containing baked diatomaceous earth (or in later use, other ceramic material), used to purify water by removing bacteria; (also) designating filtration performed with such a filter, or a filtrate obtained from one.
