Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin promptitudo.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin promptitudo eagerness, zeal (5th cent.), quickness, alacrity (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin promptus prompt adj. + -tūdo -tude suffix. Compare Middle French, French promptitude disposition to do something (1486), swiftness of mind (c1490), quality of a person who acts with alacrity (early 16th cent.), prompting (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1603 at sense 2), quality of something which happens quickly (1662), quality of something which is rapid (1690), Catalan promptitud (c1400), Spanish prontitud (15th cent.).
