单词 promptuary
释义

promptuaryn.adj.

Brit. /ˈprɒm(p)tʃʊəri/, /ˈprɒm(p)tʃᵿri/, U.S. /ˈprɑm(p)(t)ʃəˌwɛri/
Forms: late Middle English promtuari, late Middle English– promptuary, 1500s–1600s promptuarie.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin promptuārium.
Etymology: < classical Latin promptuārium storeroom, repository (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also book of summaries, manual (second half of the 15th cent.), use as noun of neuter of promptuārius , variant (after promptus action of making available or accessible: see prompt n.2) of promptārius that serves for storing things ready for use < prompt- , past participial stem of prōmere (see prompt adj.) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French, French promptuaire collection (of examples) (1519), storeroom (1534), manual, summary (1558), Italian prontuario manual (1553).As adjective apparently after classical Latin promptuārius , adjective, although the passage translated in quot. 1640 at sense B. in fact shows post-classical Latin promptuaria (1623), use as noun of feminine of classical Latin promptuārius.
