Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: red adj., point n.1
Etymology: < red adj. + point n.1, apparently after German Rotpunkt. Compare slightly earlier redpointing n.From the practice of German climber Kurt Albert (1954–2010) of marking with a painted red dot the routes he had free-climbed.
Rock Climbing.
In sport climbing: an ascent completed by a lead climber without falling or resting on the rope, though not at the first attempt (cf. onsight n. 2). Frequently attributive.

transitive. In sport climbing: to complete (a route) as a lead climber without falling or resting on the rope, having attempted or practised the route in the past (cf. onsight v.). Also intransitive.
