Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish rasgueado, rasguear.
Etymology: < Spanish rasgueado act of strumming a guitar (1803), use as noun of past participle of rasguear to strum, to make a flourish (1742), specific sense development of rasguear to scrawl (a1650; < rasgo scrawl (second half of the 15th cent.; < rasgar : see rasgado n.)). The β. forms reflect Spanish rasqueado ( < rasquear to strum, to make a flourish (both late 20th cent. or earlier), apparently alteration (after rascar to scrape, scratch: see rasgado n.) of rasguear ). Compare earlier rasgado n.Compare earlier rasqueando in same sense (apparently < Spanish rasqueando (although this is apparently first attested later: late 20th cent. or earlier), use as noun of present participle of rasquear):1858 G.
