Etymology: Probably a variant of *bill (not actually found in this sense, but compare billet n.2) < French bille ‘a young stocke of a tree to graft on’ (Cotgrave); compare 12th cent. medieval Latin billa, billus ‘branch, trunk of a tree.’

Etymology: Apparently a variant form of bill n.1 But compare Middle High German bîl, bîhel, modern German beil axe.Not in modern Cornish Gloss. of E.D. Soc.; but W. Corn. Gloss. has ‘Beal a bird's bill’.
Obsolete or dialect.
A pick-axe with both ends sharp, used to pick out the ore from the rocks.
