Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to West Frisian reinwetter , Middle Dutch rēgenwāter , rēghenwāter , reinwāter (Dutch regenwater ), Middle Low German rēgenwāter , Old High German regenwazzar (Middle High German regenwazzer , German Regenwasser ) < the Germanic base of rain n.1 + the Germanic base of water n. Compare also Old Icelandic regnvatn, Old Swedish räghnvatn (Swedish rägnvatten, (now usually) regnvatten), Old Danish rægn watn (Danish regnvand).
Water that falls from the clouds as rain; † occasionally as a count noun (obsolete).
