Etymology: < classical Latin quot hominēs tot sententiae there are as many opinions as there are men (Terence Phormio 2. 4. 14; the verse reads: Quot homines tot sententiae: suus cuique mos as many men, so many minds; to every one his own way) < quot how many (see quota n.) + hominēs , plural of homō man (see homo n.1) + tot so many (see tot v.1) + sententiae , plural of sententia sentence n.
‘There are as many opinions as there are men’: expressing the fact that there is considerable diversity of opinion, and the difficulty of bringing about agreement.The English form is often cited as ‘So many men, so many minds’: see quot. 1602.
