Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: Latin quōdam modō , -ative suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin quōdam modō in a certain way ( < quōdam , ablative ofquīdam a particular, a certain ( < quī who (see who pron.) + -dam , of uncertain origin) + modō , ablative of modus mode n.) + -ative suffix, with inserted -t- (probably after qualitative adj.), translating Hellenistic Greek πρός τί πως ἔχοντα things that exist in a certain way or in a certain relation to another thing.Hellenistic Greek πρός τί πως ἔχοντα was one of four Stoic categories found already in Chrysippus. In quot. 1656 at sense A. Stanley is citing Simplicius ( in Aristotelis Categorias Commentarium 8. 67) but he also mentions Aristo (pupil of Zeno) whose definition of this category is cited (and praised) by Simplicius ( in Aristotelis Categorias Commentarium 8. 202; compare quot. 1656 at sense B.).
