Etymology: < French quintine (C. F. B. de Mirbel 1829, in Ann. des sci. naturelles 17 309: see quot. 1832) < classical Latin quīntus fifth (see quint n.¹) + French -ine -ine suffix⁴. Compare primine n., tercine n., quartine n.¹, and earlier secundine n. 3. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (kwi·ntəin) /ˈkwɪntaɪn/.

In the terminology of C. F. B. de Mirbel: a fifth integumental layer in some developing ovules.The structure described by Mirbel apparently corresponds to the embryo sac.

1876 J. Thomas Comprehensive Med. Dict. 184/1 Endopleura, collectively, the three coats of the seed, which in the ovule were the Tercine, Quartine, and Quintine.
