Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quintine.
Etymology: < French quintine (C. F. B. de Mirbel 1829, in Ann. des sci. naturelles 17 309: see quot. 1832) < classical Latin quīntus fifth (see quint n.1) + French -ine -ine suffix4. Compare primine n., tercine n., quartine n.1, and earlier secundine n. 3. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (kwi·ntəin) /ˈkwɪntaɪn/.
Botany. Obsolete.
In the terminology of C. F. B. de Mirbel: a fifth integumental layer in some developing ovules.The structure described by Mirbel apparently corresponds to the embryo sac.

1832 tr. C. F. B. de Mirbel in J. Lindley Introd. Bot. 158 I have remarked the fifth envelope, or quintine, in many species... Its complete development takes place only in a nucleus which remains full of cellular tissue, or in a quartine that has filled with the same.
1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. 226 Some authors, as Mirbel, consider the ovule in reference to the embryo, and speak of five coverings of the latter, viz. 1. primine; 2. secundine; 3. tercine, or the nucleus; 4. quartine, a temporary cellular layer, which is occasionally formed at an after period around 5. quintine, or the embryo-sac.
1876 J. Thomas Comprehensive Med. Dict. 184/1 Endopleura, collectively, the three coats of the seed, which in the ovule were the Tercine, Quartine, and Quintine.
