Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Ni n., Ti n.1, English Naval Ordnance Laboratory.
Etymology: < Ni n. + Ti n.1 + the initial letters of Naval Ordnance Laboratory (in Silver Spring, Maryland), the place of work of the metallurgists who discovered the alloy.
Metallurgy.
An alloy of nickel and titanium; esp. one composed of equimolar proportions of these elements, which has the property of shape memory (see shape n.1 Compounds 1).
