Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīnquāgintā.

Etymology: < classical Latin quīnquāgintā fifty < quīnque five (see quinque- comb. form; the medial -ā- is due to the influence of quadrāgintā : see Quadragesima n.) + -gintā , suffix forming cardinal numerals from thirty to ninety, related to decem ten (see decem- comb. form). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (kwi·nkwădʒint) /ˈkwɪnkwədʒɪnt/.

Obsolete.

A group of fifty persons.Apparently an isolated use.
