释义 | Roberval balancen.α. 1700s– Roberval's balance. β. 1800s– Roberval balance. Science. A type of balance designed so that the indicated weight is unaffected by the position of the loads in the pans. The balance has two identical horizontal beams, one directly above the other, both pivoted centrally to a vertical column. At the end of each horizontal beam is a pivot to which is attached a vertical beam, one beam at each end, thereby forming a parallelogram linkage whose vertical sides remain parallel. The scale pans are on the top of the vertical beams. ΚΠ 1764 S. Clark Easy Introd. Theory & Pract. Mech. 87 M. Parent has in the investigation before us clearly deduced the proposed property of Roberval's balance. 1841 W. Whewell Mech. Engin. iii. 47 A balance possessing paradoxical properties, and called, from the name of its inventor, Roberval's Balance. 1887 Science 15 Apr. 364/2 Why not proceed as in the case of the Roberval balance..by tracing the pressures, produced by bodies applied to the system, the axes of rotation where such pressures become effective as ‘power’ and ‘resistance’? 1923 Proc. Physical Soc. 36 75 The chief advantage of the Roberval balance was that its large flat pan allowed room for horizontal manoeuvre of the butt. 1946 L. Toft & A. T. J. Kersey Theory of Machines (ed. 5) iv. 95 This mechanism has many applications, as in Roberval's balance where it keeps in a vertical position the rods carrying the scale pans. 2001 L. E. Goodman & W.
