Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin adarce.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin adarce, adarces (4th cent.), variants of classical Latin adarca salty deposit or efflorescence found on reeds (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀδάρκη or ἀδάρκης < Gaulish adarca, perhaps cognate with Early Irish adarc horn (although the semantic connection is unclear), of unknown origin (compare Basque adar horn, perhaps < a Celtic language). Compare Middle French adarcé (1553).With the form adraces compare post-classical Latin adracis (in an undated glossary).
Now chiefly historical.
A salty substance found on plants exposed to salt water, formed as a result of evaporation and used for therapeutic purposes.
