Etymology: Origin unknown.An early print (c1701) of the text cited in quot. a1700 reads ranty, tanty (with comma). It is uncertain whether this quot. shows the plant name. Sc. National Dict. at rantie-tantie and Eng. Dial. Dict. at ranty tanty also record use of the word in Scotland as the name of a drink distilled from heath and other vegetable substances. Eng. Dial. Dict. also records use as the name of a different plant, the broad-leaved dock. Sc. National Dict. notes an instance of rantie tantie from the 18th cent. in the sense ‘fornication’, although this may represent an independent formation (compare earlier rantum-scantum n. and rant v. 3).

Scottish and English regional (northern) Now rare.

Either of two edible plants, a cornfield weed with a reddish leaf, probably sheep's sorrel, Rumex acetosella, and common sorrel, R. acetosa.
