Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French quiétude.
Etymology: < Middle French, French quiétude (late 15th cent.) < post-classical Latin quietudo rest, tranquillity (in an undated glossary; in documents from 12th cent.) < classical Latin quiētus quiet adj. + -tūdō -tude suffix. Compare Catalan quietud (1599), Spanish quietud (c1450), Portuguese quietude (1553), Italian quietudine (1306; rare). Compare earlier quiety n., quietness n., and quiet n.
The state or condition of being quiet (in various senses of the adjective); quietness, peacefulness, tranquillity; an instance of this.
