Etymology: < quiet v. + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin quietivus (c1270 in a British source). Compare earlier quieting adj., quietsome adj. In use as noun originally after German Quietiv ( A. Schopenhauer Welt als Wille und Vorstellung (1819) iv. 546), formed in opposition to Motiv motive n.
