Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French mi-parti, mi-partir.
Etymology: < French mi-parti (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French in this sense; late 12th cent. in sense ‘made up of two equal parts’), past participle of mi-partir to divide into halves (first half of the 12th cent.) < mi- in the middle (see milieu n.) + partir to divide (see part v.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (miparti) /miːpɑːtiː/.

1896 J. Woodward Heraldry I. 478 Mi-parti—said of dimidiated arms, and of an ordinary parti per pale.
1983 Notes & Queries Oct. 449/1 The livery of the King's retinue at a major function such as the Christmas festivities of 1360 could take on an almost heraldic purpose with servants in miparti ‘short cloth’, vallets and squires in suits lined in sheepskin [etc.].
