Etymology: < post-classical Latin quadratus (1590), use as noun (short for quadratus musculus ) of classical Latin quadrātus quadrate adj.
Anatomy and Zoology.
Any of various muscles that are more or less square in shape; esp. (a) (more fully quadratus lumborum) a muscle of the back that arises from the iliac crest and lower lumbar vertebrae and inserts on the twelfth rib and upper lumbar vertebrae, serving to abduct the trunk; (b) (more fully quadratus femoris) a muscle that arises from the tuberosity of the ischium and inserts upon the intertrochanteric ridge of the femur, serving to rotate the thigh laterally. Also quadratus muscle.
