Etymology: < Middle French prochain (French prochain ) close, next (in time or space, or in degree of intimacy) (12th cent. in Old French and in Anglo-Norman), (as noun) relative (12th cent.) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *propeanus < classical Latin prope near (see proxime adj.1) + -ānus -an suffix.In prochain avoidance at sense B. 2 after Law French prochein avoidance; compare avoidance n. 4.
