Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Apparently a causative formation < the same Germanic base as quake v.1 Compare Old Saxon queki-līk (adjective) quivering.In Old English the prefixed form gecweccan to shake, brandish (compare y- prefix) is also attested. Compare also acweccan aquetch v. In quot. c1225 at sense 2b the form cwich may show an imperative rather than a past tense form.
