Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, whack n., -et suffix1.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps able adj.; compare able seaman n.) + the plural of a noun formed < whack n. + -et suffix1, perhaps after racket n.1 or racket n.2In spite of the spelling in quot. 1785, the male forename Abel seems unlikely to be the first element.
Nautical slang. Now historical and rare.
Blows given on the palm of the hand with a twisted handkerchief. Hence: a sailors' card game in which the loser of the game (or of a point) receives such blows.
